NSF International Offers GreenScreen Evaluations to Help Organizations Identify Safer Chemicals and Substitute Hazardous Chemicals with Safer Alternatives

Cabin Creekwood Offers Opportunity to Stay in a Real Civil War Cabin


Waynesboro, VA (PRWEB) January 26, 2012

Civil War enthusiasts now have the opportunity to stay overnight in a genuine Civil War cabin. This cabin, called Logwood, was originally built by Confederate Soldier William P. Tolley around 1860, and was located in the community of Goshen Pass, southwest of Staunton, VA. Tolley was drafted into the Confederate Army on March 19, 1862, to serve a three-year term. Unfortunately, he never saw the end of that term, as he was killed on May 3, 1863 in the Battle of Chancellorsville, along with 10,000 other Confederate Soldiers and 14,000 Union Troops.

In 1976, a couple by the name of George and Dorothy Stein fulfilled a long-time dream to own a craft shop in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia when they saw this cabin offered in a rural magazine. The owners were giving it away to anyone who wanted to move it! So the Steins dismantled the cabin, moved it to its current location, and spent the next 2 years of weekends reconstructing it. Some of the logs needed replaced, but Mr. Stein made them look as authentic as possible with the use of a chain saw and an axe. A couple of changes were made, most notably making the roof just a little higher. Even so, it is still common for people to bump their heads. The original cabin had a room off the back that is now the front porch. And the Steins added a deck onto the rear of the cabin, using wood from an old barn that had been torn down.

The craft shop operated under the name Mountain Blue Crafts until 1995, when it was sold to Stan & Deb Horst, owners of Cabin Creekwood. Stan & Deb hired a local contractor to add a kitchen and a bathroom, amenities that are surely important to anyone staying overnight. The kitchen was built into a corner of the downstairs, and part of the back deck was closed in to make the bathroom. In keeping with the historic theme, a cast iron claw foot tub was added for bathing.

Today, guests can reserve the cabin by the night or by the week. According to owner Stan Horst, Cabin Logwood is our most popular cabin. People really like the rustic nature of it, and the fact that it is an authentic piece of Civil War history. The cabin is available year round. In the winter, guests enjoy nearby activities such as skiing or snowboarding at Wintergreen, and then return to the cabin to prop their feet up next to a blazing fire. In the spring and fall, exploring the outdoors on the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Skyline Drive, or one of the many hiking trails is the most common activity. And in the summer, guests love to hang out at the swimming pool or Sherando Lake, known locally as the Jewel of the Blue Ridge.

If the predictions are correct American sales would be restored to prerecession normalcy, if not to the 17.4 million peak of 2000 with GM leading the way.

The January 2012 edition interviews Jason Deierlein as he recalls before and after the car accident that changed his life forever.

As a young athlete, Jason Deierlein was training as a competitive swimmer with dreams of the Olympics in his future. He remembers how hard he trained to be in top physical form for his sport; sometimes swimming laps to the point of “…near collapse, but he never gave up because he knew what it took to be a winner.”

Jason believes his dedication and determination to be physically fit saved his life from the events that transpired one stormy night in 1995. That night, while riding as a passenger in a van, a tractor-trailer truck crossed the center line causing a crash.

The driver of the van, Jason’s best friend & neighbor, lost his life that night. Jason was spared, but not by much. The tragic accident left him in a coma for months.

While in a comatose state, Jason had dreams of “…being in great persistent pain. The kind of pain he remembered from training.” He subconsciously pushed through the agony.

Upon waking from his coma, he was unable to communicate, see, or move. He had to draw on his discipline to endure the agonizing surgeries and physical therapy; all the while being unable to cry out.

After years of exercise and rehabilitative therapy, Jason made remarkable progress. Jason states, “This is because swimming saved my life after the car accident. When you are involved in a life changing situation, the condition of your body and mind will be a huge determining factor as to how well you recover.”

Oblique Magazine focuses on Jason’s progress to-date. Jason continues to use health and fitness to regain the abilities the accident took away from him. Surviving traumatic brain injury, multiple crushing fractures, a broken femur, and complete elbow reconstruction left lingering concerns related to balancing issues.

“However, using health and fitness, he has been able to continue to improve his situation even after 16 years from the car accident.” Oblique Magazine features full color images of Jason’s post recovery workout with his Fitness Trainer.

Since his recovery, Jason has created “My Positive Perspective, an Internet Talk Show dedicated to the enhancement of lives.” It stresses to parents how vital it is for their children to grow up physically fit and healthy; in body, mind, and spirit.

As a motivational speaker and talk-show Host, Jason uses his life story to “…convey to children exactly why it is imperative they respect their bodies while they are still developing and not take things for granted that will hinder their development.”

Jason wants people to know that it’s never too late to start a healthy lifestyle; however, it is far better to prepare in advance and have a physically fit foundation while you are yet young. “One never knows what tomorrow holds, it’s better to be prepared than to suffer the consequences later.”

As the son of J. David Power III, founder of J.D. Power and Associates, Mr. Power literally grew up with the business. Since 1997 he was Senior Vice President and General Manager-International Operations. Mr. Power served as Chairman of J.D Power Asia Pacific in the mid 1990s, and later managed the J.D. Power and Associates regional office in Troy, Michigan. He launched his professional career at the advertising agency Foote, Cone and joined the Chevrolet Motor Division of General Motors Corporation in the late 1980s. Mr. Power serves on the Board of Trustees for the University of San Diego and manages several of the Power familys community and philanthropic activities that focus on education and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Steve Wilhite

Mr. Wilhite has built a successful career in sales, marketing, and business leadership including senior executive roles at Volkswagen, Apple, Nissan, Hyundai and Jumpstart Automotive Group. As marketing leader at VW, Steve led development of the “Drivers Wanted” campaign and launch of the new Beetle. As the VP of Global Marketing Communications for Apple, he led global marketing activities, and worked on development of the Apple store. Steve then became VP of Marketing for the Nissan and Infiniti brands in the US where he led development of the Shift_ marketing campaign before moving to Tokyo as the SVP of Global Marketing for Nissan Motors Ltd. He was recruited as the COO of Hyundai North America and subsequently joined the Jumpstart Automotive Group as CEO.

Bill Young

Mr. Young is a current board member at Lithia Motors, Inc. and Fuel Systems Solutions, Inc. A former CEO of Volkswagen America, he is a well-respected leader with over 30 years of experience in the automotive industry. Mr. Young served as Executive Director at J.D. Power and Associates and as President and CEO of Advanced Machine Vision. Bill has been mentoring startups and young companies for more than ten years.
